new m/h speed limits for france

Post  chapter on Tue Jun 23, 2009 5:22 pm

Driving your motorhome in France
INFORMATION ON DRIVING
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Speed Limits
For motorhomes with a gvw of less than 3500kg the speed limits are as for cars, ie 130kph on autoroutes (110kph in wet weather) and 110kph on dual carriageways and 90kph on other roads. Generally assume there is a 50kph speed limit in built-up areas unless indicated otherwise.

For motorhomes heavier than 3500kg there are new regulations for 2009. These are 110kph on autoroutes, 100kph on dual carriageways and 80kph on other roads.

If you have a motorhome and trailer that is over 3500kg in weight (even if the motorhome is less than 3500kg) the rules are even stricter: 90kph on autoroutes, 80kph on dual carriageways and 80kph on other roads.

France has a large number of both static and mobile speed cameras and the limits are strictly enforced. Even 1kph over the limit can result in a hefty on-the-spot fine.

Flourescent Jackets
These must be carried in your vehicle and worn if any of you have to get out of the vehicle on to the road.

Documentation
You need to carry your driving licence, passport and ALL the vehicle documents. These must be in the vehicle at all times

I can appreciate for safety sake and must admit found 130kph far too fast but these on the spot fines are a bit rich and sound quite scarey. How can they justify fines like that can you imagine the outcry we would get in this country if that happened?

Am getting quite jumpy these days with all the scaremongering going on (am not saying Chapter is scaremongering) but you hear about gassing, Shocked on spot fines, robbing, etc - makes it more attractive not going to France more and more.

Just keep over 145 miles per hour, the cameras arn't quick enough, Fanny is now powered by fairy dust so its easy!

Usually try to avoid toll roads but rarely do 110 kph on free motorways 100 kph on dual carriageways is adequate. It is the 80 kph on single carriageways that is a bit annoying. Usually in holiday mode not in a hurry but 90 to 100 kph I would have thought ok in modern heavy motorhomes. Don't see the heavy lorries slowing down. If i try to stick to 80 kph the lorries are right up my back side and are very intimidating.
